Social Life was appointed by Swan Housing, working with Southend Council, to carry out a baseline neighbourhood study of the area around Queensway in Southend-on-Sea.
The Better Queensway scheme aims to create new housing and entail significant changes to the local environment, through alterations to the road network and public realm.
The research took place before the long-term regeneration project started. The baseline provided an assessment of local assets and needs, which informed Swan Housing’s community development programme and set a benchmark against which the impact of regeneration activities was assessed, including residents’ experience of the built environment.
We explored the impact of the current physical environment and socio- economic conditions on everyday life, as well as residents' perceptions of local life.
